CALAVERAS COUNTY VINEYARD
Originally established as Cave City Vineyards in 1999, Cavern Vineyards now sits on 12.9 acres with 7 acres planted and 5 in full production including high quality Syrah, Tempranillo, Malbec, Barbera & Petite Sirah.
At an elevation of 2100 feet above sea level on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Cavern Vineyards is located just 2.1 miles from California Cavern State Historic Landmark - a limestone Cave with an extensive system of caverns and passageways that was visited by Mark Twain, Bret Harte and John Muir, who wrote about his visit in his 1894 book, The Mountains of California.
Soils in the rocky outcrop are mapped by the USDA as the Mariposa and Jocal series. These soils formed in material weathered from tilted slates, shists, and metasedimentary rocks, and have a thin layer of pine needles, fir needle-like leaves, and duff.
Climate: Hot, dry summers and warm moist winters. Average precipitation is 20 inches per year.
